Japanese Woman
Circa 1880
Bronze with brown patina
Plate signed : Japonaise A. Lanson (GD Prix de Rôme)
Cast in bronze, this sculpture by Alfred Lanson represents a Japanese Woman in traditional dress.
She wears a kimono, gaping at the chest, revealing her breasts.
With her right hand, she gathers the folds of her kimono in a swirling movement.
She wears all the elements of a Geisha - thick wooden sandals called geta, the traditional chignon - and she carries a shamisen a sort of three-stringed guitar.
An obi, a large sash, closes the Kimono with a large knot in the back.
The monumental style, the sensuality of the figure and of the folds of the cloth, are signs of the work of a great sculptor.
